A university nursing program noticed that students were making capstone and specialty decisions late in their education, often based on limited exposure or external pressure. Faculty wanted to give students a more structured way to explore specialty fit earlier in the curriculum.
The intervention
The program introduced Helius personality intelligence and specialty alignment tools in the second semester of the junior year. Students completed a structured self-assessment, received personalized interpretation, and met with advisors to discuss alignment ranges across multiple specialties. The goal was to broaden exploration, not narrow it.
Student response
Students reported that the alignment framework helped them ask better questions during clinical rotations and feel more confident in capstone selection. Advisors noted that conversations became more personalized and less focused on availability or prestige. Several students identified interest in specialties they had not previously considered.
Program impact
The program is now integrating alignment concepts into career development coursework and tracking student outcomes over time. Faculty plan to share longitudinal data on specialty satisfaction and early-career retention with partner health systems.
